Jared Smith Experiences Recovery from Traumatic Accident on July 4, 2010
As many of you know, Jared Smith a Physician Assistant at Shasta Orthopaedics, was involved in a diving accident on July 4, 2010. He sustained a C7 Burst fracture that resulted in a C7 Quadriplegia.
After three surgeries at Mercy Hospital, Jared was transferred to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, the best hospital for rehabilitation of traumatic spinal cord injury on the west coast. He was scheduled to stay in the hospital for 3 months, but was limited to only 7 weeks due to the $1 million cap on his treatment. Remarkably, Jared returned to work at Shasta Orthopaedics exactly 4 months to the day after the accident. His positive outlook on his recovery played a large part in his ability to return to work so soon after his injury.
While Jared continues to focus on his recovery, he is also helping other patients of spinal cord injury to ensure that they receive the best care available through cooperation with hospitals in the area. He is currently working with Mercy Hospital’s HR department to create a better referral system for patients that want to receive care at Santa Clara.
As Jared experienced, even with insurance the process involved in transferring to the Santa Clara facility can be very time consuming, and it takes much longer for patients without insurance. Jared hopes to streamline the system to help patients move to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center once they have been stabilized and are ready for transfer. He is also meeting with patients and their families to help them cope with trauma and to become highly functional.
Jared has also joined the board of TheRoses4Hope.org, a non-profit that provides assistance to families with a loved one who has a spinal cord injury or other disabling neurological condition. He created the Jared Smith Spinal Cord Injury Organization that organizes a benefit Golf Tournament every April. For more information please go to www.theroses4hope.org.
