POSITION:
Orthopaedic Technician
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Manager and Physicians
JOB SUMMARY:
Provide professional casting, bracing, strapping and orthopaedic care, under supervision, for clinic patients.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma required
- Registered or Certified Orthopaedic Technician (ROT), experience in Orthopaedic care and medical assistant experience a plus
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- At least two years of experience in a physician office or hospital
- Experience calling in pharmacy requests
- Comfortable using email and interacting with Internet applications
- Knowledge of practice management and word processing software
- Pleasant speaking voice and demeanor;
- Good communication skills and the ability to perform patient education duties
- Neat, professional appearance
DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Escorts patients to casting area, prepares them for application of casting, bracing, strapping, removal of casting, bracing, strappings, application of splints and dressings as directed by physician.
- Preparation and set up for specific types of traction, making adjustments as necessary and assist the physician in the reduction of fractures and dislocations. Educates the patients about casting, bracing, strapping care and follow-up instructions.

- Provides continuity of post-op care casting, splinting and bracing, documents all treatment in patients EMR.
- Responsible for maintaining coding procedures for modalities and supplies utilized to include physical labor cost for application, assessment and fitting, in accordance to HCFA, CPT codes.
- Assists in maintaining records of cast room supplies and in keeping the cast room stocked.
- Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines and sterilizes all utensils used within the clinic daily.
- Responsible for the ordering of all casting, bracing, strappinging supplies.
- Facilitates patient flow and assist physician and nursing personnel with coordination of patient care.
- Maintains cast room in a clean and orderly condition; maintains cast room equipment in a workable condition.
- Responsible for the shipping and receiving area as well as the stocking and distribution of merchandise/supplies received daily.
- Regularly reports “free-time” to supervisors and readily volunteers for additional work as assigned by Facility Manager/Supervisor.
- Take prompt initiative in solving problems.
- Actively participate in all training, educational sessions and meetings.
- Assists other Departments and or staff when requested by appropriate management representative.
- Any other tasks, duties and responsibilities assigned.

- Observes established SOSM and department policies and procedures, including confidentiality, safety, infection control and other environmental regulations.

- Interacts effectively with all customers, both internal and external, including patients, guests, Apogee Surgery Center, hospital staff, physicians and their offices, and other SOSM departments to accomplish departmental functions.

- Assertively and professionally works to resolve difficult interactions with physicians, co-workers, visitors or personnel from other departments; uses chain of command to promptly address departmental operation concerns, and unresolved issues with others.

Typical Physical Demands
Position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, as well as manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking. Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required. Employee will work under stressful conditions, and work irregular hours. Employee will be exposed to bodily fluids on a regular basis.
Typical Working Conditions
Employee will have frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
