Shasta Orthopaedics has an accredited fellowship program: the Northern California Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Fellowship.

What Is A Fellowship?

A doctor in an accredited fellowship program is called a fellow. After the doctor has completed a residency program they may wish to obtain additional training in a surgical speciality. The fellowship experience is meant to expose the doctor to techniques and training in a surgical speciality or subspecialty. A fellow candidate has already completed their residency training.

Shasta Orthopaedics Northern California Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Fellowship

The Northern California Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Fellowship at Shasta Orthopaedics is recognized by The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. ACFAS is “a professional society of more than 7,600 foot and ankle surgeons (that) seeks to promote the art and science of foot, ankle and related lower extremity surgery.” They currently recognize over 40 foot and ankle surgery and reconstruction fellowships in the United States.

Jason Nowak, DPM, FACFAS is Northern California Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Fellowship’s program director.

Jason Nowak, DPM, FACFAS is Northern California Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Fellowship’s program director. Dr. Nowak has been Shasta Orthopaedics’ foot and ankle surgeon since 2013, and he is board certified in foot, reconstructive rear foot and ankle surgery by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. As the program director Dr. Nowak is responsible for developing, overseeing, and improving the fellowship programs. The faculty consists of an additional twelve Shasta Orthopaedics doctors and one nurse practitioner.

The Northern California Reconstructive Foot & Ankle fellowship program at Shasta Orthopaedics is a one year program beginning on August 1 and commencing on July 31st the following year.

The fellow also learns how to integrate into a large, busy orthopaedic practice. The fellow is expected to become proficient in all facets of foot and ankle surgery, as well as being able to manage a busy foot and ankle clinic. There is ample exposure to surgical and office billing, allowing for a complete, well-rounded fellowship experience.

The program’s 2023-2024 Foot & Ankle fellowship participant is Scott Schleunes, DPM.

Before coming to Shasta Ortho Dr. Schleunes served as Chief Resident at the West Penn Foot and Ankle Surgical Residency in Pittsburgh, PA.

The program’s 2022-2023 participant is Helene Cook, DPM. She earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) from the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Cook was the Chief Resident for the MedStar Podiatric Surgery Residency Program in Washington DC.

The program’s 2021-2022 participant is Collin G. Messerly, DPM. As a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), he diagnoses and treats foot, ankle and leg conditions. He completed his residency training at Regions Hospital/HealthPartners Institute for Education & Research in St. Paul, MN.

The program’s 2020-2021 participant is Dr. Garret Strand. Dr. Strand is Board Qualified in both foot and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He completed his surgical foot and ankle residency at Wheaton Franciscan – Ascension Hospital in Milwaukee, WI.
