For Ben Weaver, football has been a major focus for most of his life. In fact, he calls himself a "Football Nerd". As a kid he loved to toss the ball around with his siblings, he played in high school and college and even played on a semi-pro team while working at his current job as Assistant Coach at Shasta College. So when Ben dislocated and separated his shoulder and could no longer throw the ball to his team during practice, he went right to Dr. Schillen at Shasta Orthopaedics who found he had a torn labrum, torn rotator cuff and a bone chip in his shoulder. At the time Ben's wife had a baby on the way so Ben delayed the operation for 6 months.

For those unfamiliar, Anderson Silva is a UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship, the largest mixed martial arts organization in the world) fighter who is recognized as one of the greatest middleweight champions of the sport (Silva was undefeated with 14 wins prior to his first fight with Chris Wiedman. Note the injury occurred in his 2nd fight with Wiedman).
When he joined Shasta Orthopaedics in July of 2013, foot and ankle surgical specialist, Dr. Jason Nowak, began offering new innovative surgical and non-surgical techniques to North State patients. For patients suffering from advanced arthritis in the ankle, Dr. Nowak utilized the INBONE® II System – a total ankle replacement system that is effective thanks to its long stem design (inserted into the patient’s tibia) and also to its compatibility with PROPHECY® Pre-Operative Navigation Alignment technology. PROPHECY technology uses CT scans to create ankle alignment guides unique to each patient. These guides play an important role in the overall success of the ankle replacement procedure because they allow surgeons like Dr. Nowak to properly size, place and align ankle components during the surgery.

Winter sports injuries get a lot of attention at hospital emergency rooms, doctors' offices and clinics. Injuries include sprains and strains, dislocations and fractures. In 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported:
The following article was written by Tony Chang, M.D. , M.S. of the Shasta Orthopaedics Sports Medicine Team.
In our sports world today, athletes may look for that extra edge-a way to boost energy, improve endurance, quicken reaction speed and counter drowsiness. Many athletes will consume energy drinks, unaware of the health and legal hazards.
In 2003, the NCAA instituted a list of banned-drug classes, including stimulants, anabolic agents and street drugs that are prohibited for use by NCAA athletes. Two common ingredients in energy drinks, taurine and guarana, were banned. Caffeine is considered a restricted substance and not a banned substance.
