30 Oct Shasta College Football Coach’s Recovery Journey

Summer is winding down and for many of the North State’s young people that means a return to school and participation in fall sports such as football, volleyball, cross country, swimming, soccer and more.
As the sports medicine provider for both Shasta College and Simpson University, along with many of the Area’s sports teams, Shasta Orthopaedics offers athletes of all ages a variety of services to keep them healthy and to optimize performance:
Participation in sports activities can be wonderful for a child’s physical and emotional health. But where’s the line on your child’s exercise routine, and how much is too much?
The answer lies in each individual child. What might be too much for one child may be completely healthy for another. It’s important to know what your child can handle, and also to take steps to prevent exhaustion, injuries, mental “burn out,” and eating disorders.
While the risk of injury varies from sport to sport, the most common cause of injury, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is overuse:
Coaches, Trainers, Athletes and Parents of Athletes Tony Chang, M.D., fellowship trained sports medicine specialist, conducted a free community lecture on concussions. Dr. Chang provided the latest information regarding concussions, injury...
19-year-old Hailee Lollar has already proven she’s got what it takes to be a champion. Just a month ago at the 2014 National Junior Weightlifting Championships in Colorado, Hailee took the gold in her weight class beating out 20 other young women between the ages of 15 and 20.
Now she has a chance to experience a little more of that limelight: With enough votes, Hailee can make it to the front cover of USA Weightlifting Magazine.

Sometimes life can take us on unexpected journeys. Those who are open to trying new things are often the most successful at seizing opportunities when they present themselves. That’s exactly what happened to Olympic hopeful and Redding resident, Hailee Lollar back in 2009 when she left competitive gymnastics after eight years, and opted to try her hand at CrossFit, an intense exercise program featuring dynamic exercises like plyometric jumps, while using non-traditional weightlifting equipment such as kettlebells, sand-bags, suspension systems or water-filled implements. It did not take long for Redding Barbell and CrossFit Club owner Bryan Schenone to see Hailee’s natural talent for strength and lifting and in 2011 encouraged her to begin adding Olympic lifting to her workouts.
It was at Schenone’s suggestion that she entered her first weight lifting competition (after only one month of training). To everyone’s surprise, then 16-year-old Hailee qualified for the Youth National Championships. Hailee skipped Youth Nationals that year, but traveled to Junior Nationals six months later and took second place in the female under 21, 53.1-58.1 kilo weight class. Hailee’s lifts are the “Snatch” and “Clean and Jerk”.
A fascinating sport that originated in Northern California in 1955, endurance horseback riding includes covering either 50 or 100 miles in a 24-hour period. In 2012, Shasta County resident Irene Burnett...
Flexible, strong muscles are the best way to keep your knees healthy and prevent future injury, so even if you have some knee pain, developing an exercise routine that will strengthen the surrounding muscles can help you in more ways than one. Strengthening the muscles surrounding your knee helps to alleviate some of the stress and strain placed on the knee when performing everyday activities. Stretching can also help you build more flexibility, which can reduce tightness that is sometimes caused by strengthening the muscles through exercise.
If you suffer from pain in your feet or lower legs, you may have considered using an orthotic to help restore balance. Orthotics are designed to reduce or eliminate foot pain, align the feet to eliminate abnormal foot motion, and to encourage optimal balance when walking. While over-the-counter orthotics are available in most drug stores, seeing a doctor to have your foot problem assessed and a custom orthotic designed for your foot generally leads to better results.
