Shoulder Surgery In Redding For Ben Weaver, football has been a major focus for most of his life. In fact, he calls himself a "Football Nerd". As a kid he loved to toss the ball around with his siblings, he played in high school and college and even played on a semi-pro team while working at his current job as Assistant Coach at Shasta College. So when Ben dislocated and separated his shoulder and could no longer throw the ball to his team during practice, he went right to Dr. Schillen at Shasta Orthopaedics who found he had a torn labrum, torn rotator cuff and a bone chip in his shoulder. At the time Ben's wife had a baby on the way so Ben delayed the operation for 6 months.

August Means Back to School and Fall Sports Seasons for Young Athletes

Summer is winding down and for many of the North State’s young people that means a return to school and participation in fall sports such as football, volleyball, cross country, swimming, soccer and more.

As the sports medicine provider for both Shasta College and Simpson University, along with many of the Area’s sports teams, Shasta Orthopaedics offers athletes of all ages a variety of services to keep them healthy and to optimize performance:

Child ExerciseParticipation in sports activities can be wonderful for a child’s physical and emotional health. But where’s the line on your child’s exercise routine, and how much is too much?

The answer lies in each individual child. What might be too much for one child may be completely healthy for another. It’s important to know what your child can handle, and also to take steps to prevent exhaustion, injuries, mental “burn out,” and eating disorders.

While the risk of injury varies from sport to sport, the most common cause of injury, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is overuse:

Note the injury occurred in his 2nd fight with Wiedman).

Back Pain In Children While back pain in adults is relatively common, children are more flexible and their bodies are more resilient, thus making back pain among that population less common. Because chronic or severe back pain can often be caused by a more serious medical problem, medical providers are more likely to treat such issues very seriously.

Here are some common back conditions that appear among children:

Scheuermann's Kyphosis (rounded back) – A common cause of middle back pain, Scheuermann's kyphosis occurs when vertebrae become wedged, causing a rounded, or hunched, back. Children with Scheuermann's kyphosis may complain of pain in the curved part of the back, and that pain may increase with activity.

Symptoms Of Concussions In Kids We've all heard a lot more about concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in recent years. Medical practitioners now better understand how devastating and debilitating multiple concussions can be as they can affect the way a brain functions. As of 2012 all major professional sports leagues such as the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB have policies and procedures for handling concussions. If your child is part of any organized sport team or group, be sure to ask to see their policies on how to handle concussions. Not all concussions are caused by organized sports; they are often caused by a fall, a car or bike accident or severe jarring to the body. A child with a concussion may be knocked unconscious, but most are not. Symptoms of a concussion may develop 24 to 72 hours after an injury. If your child shows any of these signs, take him to his doctor right away.

Redding California Weightlifter Hailee Lollar

Sometimes life can take us on unexpected journeys. Those who are open to trying new things are often the most successful at seizing opportunities when they present themselves. That’s exactly what happened to Olympic hopeful and Redding resident, Hailee Lollar back in 2009 when she left competitive gymnastics after eight years, and opted to try her hand at CrossFit, an intense exercise program featuring dynamic exercises like plyometric jumps, while using non-traditional weightlifting equipment such as kettlebells, sand-bags, suspension systems or water-filled implements. It did not take long for Redding Barbell and CrossFit Club owner Bryan Schenone to see Hailee’s natural talent for strength and lifting and in 2011 encouraged her to begin adding Olympic lifting to her workouts.

It was at Schenone’s suggestion that she entered her first weight lifting competition (after only one month of training). To everyone’s surprise, then 16-year-old Hailee qualified for the Youth National Championships. Hailee skipped Youth Nationals that year, but traveled to Junior Nationals six months later and took second place in the female under 21, 53.1-58.1 kilo weight class. Hailee’s lifts are the “Snatch” and “Clean and Jerk”.

Flexible, strong muscles are the best way to keep your knees healthy and prevent future injury, so even if you have some knee pain, developing an exercise routine that will strengthen the surrounding muscles can help you in more ways than one. Strengthening the muscles surrounding your knee helps to alleviate some of the stress and strain placed on the knee when performing everyday activities. Stretching can also help you build more flexibility, which can reduce tightness that is sometimes caused by strengthening the muscles through exercise.

Custom Orthotics Reduce Foot Pain

If you suffer from pain in your feet or lower legs, you may have considered using an orthotic to help restore balance. Orthotics are designed to reduce or eliminate foot pain, align the feet to eliminate abnormal foot motion, and to encourage optimal balance when walking. While over-the-counter orthotics are available in most drug stores, seeing a doctor to have your foot problem assessed and a custom orthotic designed for your foot generally leads to better results.
