Shasta Orthopaedics News & Events

For many years, patients suffering from arthritic ankles and bone-on-bone pain had limited options: live with the pain, or have the bones fused. Relatively recent advancements in new technologies and surgical techniques have since opened up new options for treatment of osteoarthritis in ankles including the more traditional open ankle fusion (arthrodesis), arthroscopic ankle fusion, and joint replacement (also called total ankle replacement or TAR).

While choice of treatment options is encouraging, making a decision about which option to select is not always easy, and is usually affected by a patient's personal circumstances.

Gardening And Back ProblemsFive Ways to Avoid Common Back Problems Caused By Gardening

It’s that time of year again. Warmer weather has returned, birds are singing and our thoughts have turned to growing things outside. Tips For Drinking More Water

Staying hydrated is extremely important if you're an athlete of course, but it's also important for everyone to get enough water no matter who they are. Depending on size, gender, and activity level, the recommended daily amount can vary from 2 liters to 3 or more liters per day for adults. For a lot of people, drinking water isn't at the top of their "most exciting things to do" list, so they need a little extra motivation to get their daily dose. We put together a list of ways that can help you hydrate.

Tips For Drinking More Water

1. Bring It With You - To work, to school, while you're running errands, wherever you go, make it a habit to always have water with you. Get a water bottle or a thermos, fill it up, and make it your daily accessory the same as you would your wallet or your phone.

Total Ankle Replacement System In Redding

Shasta Ortho’s Dr. Jason Nowak Among First Surgeons in the Nation to Use Cutting Edge New Total Ankle System

When he joined Shasta Orthopaedics in July of 2013, foot and ankle surgical specialist, Dr. Jason Nowak, began offering new innovative surgical and non-surgical techniques to North State patients. For patients suffering from advanced arthritis in the ankle, Dr. Nowak utilized the INBONE® II System – a total ankle replacement system that is effective thanks to its long stem design (inserted into the patient’s tibia) and also to its compatibility with PROPHECY® Pre-Operative Navigation Alignment technology. PROPHECY technology uses CT scans to create ankle alignment guides unique to each patient. These guides play an important role in the overall success of the ankle replacement procedure because they allow surgeons like Dr. Nowak to properly size, place and align ankle components during the surgery.

Back Pain In Children While back pain in adults is relatively common, children are more flexible and their bodies are more resilient, thus making back pain among that population less common. Because chronic or severe back pain can often be caused by a more serious medical problem, medical providers are more likely to treat such issues very seriously.

Here are some common back conditions that appear among children:

Scheuermann's Kyphosis (rounded back) – A common cause of middle back pain, Scheuermann's kyphosis occurs when vertebrae become wedged, causing a rounded, or hunched, back. Children with Scheuermann's kyphosis may complain of pain in the curved part of the back, and that pain may increase with activity.
